DIY Hoop Fashion

Flow leggings

How many times have you checked out etsy porn? Ogling shirts and pants and flow accessories, wishing you could make some of these threads…?
Honestly, we all know hooping naked is the best way to hoop, but until society’s standards change, we’re gunna have to work with what we’ve got.
Problem is when you’re stuck choosing between fire wicks or flow pants…things get a little complicated.
So here are some adorable hoop-friendly fashions you can easily make with what you’ve already got in your closet!

These threads are ordered from least to most time-consuming, if you want more, comment below for what you want and I’ll do my best to find something for you!

Leg Warmers!

Things you need:

  • A pair of leggings
  • A glue gun
  • Decorations; Flowers/buttons/pretty string

This is super easy and you can give your own pretty flare to them!

Step 1.

  • Wash your leggings and put them in the dryer so they’re nice and snug.

Step 2.

  • Fold your leggings longways down the middle of the crotch.
  • Cut the leggings anywhere between 14-20 inches from the bottom. Cut the legs together so one won’t be longer than the other.

Step 3.

  • Put on the legwarmers so the bottom edge is now the top, and the cut end on on the bottom.

Step 4.

  • Decorate! You can glue the string around the top, buttons down the side, or flowers on the outside! Tada! Beautiful, unique and easy!

Fringe Bandeau

You will need:

  • A tank top with a snug breast lining inside (preferably made of polyester or spandex material for smooth strips)
  • An elastic band (usually $3-$5 at a craft store)
  • Scissors, safety pins, needle and thread
  • Beads

Step 1.

  • Put the tank top on.
  • Take your arms out of the straps.
  • Flip the bottom of the shirt up above your chest, so you can see just the bandeau area of the shirt.

Step 2.

  • Place elastic around the top of where the bandeau should begin; above the breasts. Make sure it’s nice and snug; you don’t want it falling down!
  • Safety pin it in place. Make sure the elastic is on only the flat material; NOT the lacy lining or the straps.

Step 3.

  • Sew the elastic in place, while wearing it. If you’re a well-ripened seamstress, there might be an easier way to do this. For me, sewing it while it’s on is the best way to make sure it will fit and stay neat.
  • Start with sewing the top of the elastic first; if needed, sew the bottom of the elastic, too, although this will probably not be necessary.

Step 4.

  • After the elastic is firmly attached, cut the lacy top and straps off. Cut at neatly and closely along the top of the elastic’s lining.

Step 5.

  • Now take the shirt off, flip it inside out, and put it back on normally, it should look like a clean, sleeveless shirt.

Step 6.

  • Cut the shirt up an inch below where the first elastic starts, then, cut the fabric into strips.
  • Decorate theses strips with beads!

Flow Leggings

You will need:

  • A tight pair of yoga pants
  • Measuring tape (or another measuring tool)
  • An old ruffly dress
  • A sewing machine (optional)
  • Sewing supplies (pins, scissors, thread, needle)

Step 1:

  • Put on the yoga pants. Find the length you like, and where the ruffles will come in. Are the ruffles even straight across? Or shorter in front and longer in back? If you want the ruffled lining straight across, fold them down the crotch and cut the legs straight across so they’re even. Make sure to leave an inch of extra length.
  • If you want the lace to be longer in front and shorter in back, the process is similar, but a little more complicated. Fold the pants down the crotch and so they’re even when you cut them. Do not cut a straight angle.  Give the cut a very rounded incline; so it’s almost a half-circle.

Step 2:

  •  Measure around the…leg hole? The area you just cut. Record the number so you don’t forget.
  • Cut the ruffles off your dress. but make sure you have enough material (plus two inches minimum) to go around the bottoms. You will also want to be sure to leave a half inch of material at the top of the ruffles.

Step 3.

  • Fold the upper material of your ruffles over, so it creates a smooth seam at the top.
  • Pin this seam across the bottom of your pants. (This is what the extra inch on the pants was for). Start the ruffles on the outer seam of the pants, and pin around until you come back to the outer seam again.
  • You can either trim off the left over ruffles, so there is a small split, or, you can overlap the ruffles, so there is no break at all.

Step 4.

  • Sew the ruffles to the pants either with the sewing machine, or by hand. The sewing machine is faster, but may be a little more difficult because you are sewing the ruffles around rather than in a straight line. Take your time, and don’t forget to back-stitch if you’re using a machine.

Flow Pants!

Things you need:

  • Long cotton skirt or Yoga Skirt (preferably white)
  • Tie Dye
  • Sewing Machine (optional)
  • Sewing materials (pins, scissors, needle, thread)
  • A pair of jeans in your size (to use as a pattern)

NOTE: (The style of the skirt should be long and plain; without pleats or seems across the front. There are ways to make flow pants out of all types of skirts, but these are the most simple to work with).

Step 1.

  • Tie dye your skirt. You don’t have to do this, especially if your shirt is already colored or is not cotton.
  • Make sure you soak the skirt in you soda ash for at least an hour to ensure bright, vivid colors.
  • Leave the dye in for at least 24 hours.
  • When rinsing, hose the skirt off while still tied in the rubber bands. Undo the rubber bands and lay the skirt on the grass and hose off both sides.
  • Let the skirt dry lying flat down in the sun. The skirt must be completely dry before moving onto the next step.

Step 2.

  • Turn your skirt inside out.
  • Lay your skirt down flat. Make sure there are no creases or folds in the skirt.
  • Lay your jeans over the skirt, make sure the waistline of the jeans is positioned at least 3-5 inches below the waistline of the skirt.
  • In most cases, the sides of the skirt will flare out past the legs of the pants. This is a good thing!
  • Pin the “^” shape between the legs of the pants, using your jeans as a guide.
  • Don’t worry about the crotch-area, just do your best to ensure the pins are neat and done as best you can.
  • Cut the shape out about an inch away from the pins.
  • Keep the pins in!

Step 3.

  • Carefully sew the seams for each leg together, starting from the bottom of the leg, and working your way up to the crotch. Do this for both sides.
  • This is when sewing machines come in handy. You can hand-sew these, but it will take at least two hours, as apposed to the ten minutes a sewing machine takes.
  • When selecting the color of the thread, don’t be flashy, try to pick a color that will blend is as much as possible.
  • When your finished with both legs, you should have most of your pants complete except for a hole in the crotch. Don’t worry, this is easy.
  • NOTE: When using a sewing machine, always to back-stitch the beginning and end of the seams. Also, remember to keep the pants inside out!

Step 4.

  • Put on your pants while they’re still inside out.
  • Hand-sew the crotch together…carefully!
  • Cut the extra material sticking out of the seams. Trim any loose threads and hand sew any sloppy or loose fabric from the sewing machine. It’s with the extra ten minutes to make sure the pants don’t fall apart!

I hope you guys try these awesome DIY ideas before spending your money on Etsy. Not that the Etsy people don’t make clothes much better than us, but we’re all on budget. It’s much better to know you can get those fire prongs, and still have a pair of awesome flow pants. If there’s more fun threads you wanna make, leave a comment below, and I’ll give it a try and post more for you!
