You can see it now can’t you? Money flowing into your pockets and hoops whirling out the door at dizzying speeds! I know this feeling, this visions, this dream, I was once in the exact same place. I dreamt of being able to work for myself and not have to serve tables or slave behind a hot line at 120 degrees in the middle of summer when I could be out hooping and sharing this love of spinning circles with the world. Guess what? I turned this dream into reality and it was the best thing I have ever done for myself.
I left the restaurant industry back in the fall of 2005 with a vision of selling circus props through ebay. I really had no idea what the hell I was doing, but I did have a product, just one, and I knew that I had the drive and motivation to learn what I needed to in order to be successful and not go crawling back to the kitchen…..which I had to do…..once.
The first thing you should ask yourself is, “Do I want to do this as a hobby or a full time job?” These are both very different things and will really affect how much effort you end up putting into your venture. If you just want to sling some hoops on the side to pay for your tubing, tape, connectors, tools, etc, etc, that’s great and more power to you! Or do you want to become #1 on google for terms such as “polypro hoops” , “hoops for sale” , “exercise hoops“. It is important to know why you want to sell hula hoops to make money before you throw up an etsy store and take a picture with your iphone.
It’s called VISION and DIRECTION and it makes a difference. For the purposes of this series of posts on How to Make Money Selling Hoops Online, I will assume that the latter is your direction of choice and that you are setting out to become the next big “Hoopepreneur.” Now that we both know you are serious about selling hoops, lets start looking at this as starting a small business, because that is what we are about to do. Are you excited? Are you nervous? Do you have any idea what you are getting yourself into? Starting a small business is one of those huge, life-altering events. Think of it as a marriage; running a successful small business takes the same depth of commitment and desire. As in a marriage, you’re going to be living with your business 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Like any relationship, if you want your small business to be successful, you’re going to have to work at it. And it’s going to have its ups and downs and surprises.
Enough talk, you’re here for a reason, to learn to sell hoops online successfully. First thing we should think about is a name. What do you want to be called? How do you want people to refer to you online and in person? There are a million in one hooper names out there and those people have built brands around their name. Think of Hoop Girl and Hoopnotica, they have both built their brand around their name, even before they started selling hoops, they were recognized in the hooping world. You can go with something like this or you can begin to think like a search engine or a future customer typing in a search query to hopefully find your product before anyone else’s. This would look something like; Polypro Hoops, Hula Hoops, Hoops for sale, Cheap Hula Hoops, Collapsible Hula Hoops, etc. If you really want to get serious about it you could try out a program like Noble Samurai or SEMRush . These programs are designed to help you find high quality keywords with lots of relevance and little competition. If you plan on building a few website, I recommend using them.
